S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
It's on sale at BassPro Shops, and was thinking of selling a roll of SAE and picking up one of these. The review I read only complained about the trigger pull being a bit tough, but noticeable only after a long shoot session.

Don't buy at the overpriced BassPro. S&W is having a big sale on the Sigma series with a $50 rebate. (gee I wonder if they can put an rfid chip in a polymer frame???). Should be well under 3 bills I think.

Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
I had a Sigma, bought it brand new in 2004 for a little more than $300. The trigger was why it had to go. The pull is just too much for quick and accurate shooting. This may not seen important, but under stress it is important because you will be inclined to jerk off those shots as fast as you can pull the trigger. If the trigger sucks, so does the whole gun, unless you do something about that trigger. Other than the trigger the gun seemed OK with my reloads and was accurate.
One day I tried some factory ammo that I was testing for concealed carry use. This ammo had higher velocity and more power than my reloads. At this time I was experiencing failures to extract with the factory ammo and not my reloads. It was at that moment that I decided to trade it at a loss. The bottom line is that the Sigma SW40VE that I had is a real disservice to the S&W name. I do not recommend it, save your money and get a Glock 23 like I did. Also, the light rail on the Sigma I had was the weirdest thing, it was non standard and didn't work with any tactical light I could find. Looks like some proprietary design by S&W. |
Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
-1 on the Sigma...I owned one in 9mm years ago...Bad trigger pull. I even had a gunsmith work on it to lighten it...no help. He could not get a decent pull with any degree of reliability--the trigger would not always reset. After that, I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.
+1 on the Glock...you will be much happier with it than the Sigma, IMO. |
Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
I have a glock in the 45, and for the most part like it, but the grip angle is awful. I did some research and the trigger fix is real simple, only requiring removal of some trigger springs.

Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
Back when I owned 1911s, I couldn't get used to the Glock grip angle either...until I sold all of the 1911s and went Glock almost exclusively. Now the Glock grip is a very natural pointer for me and the muzzle flip is noticeably less than the 1911. Many folks have problems adapting to the grip angle when they keep switching back and forth between various pistols...a memory thing.

Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
i looked at the Sigma several months back when it was on sale at Gander Mountain for 279 plus 50 dollar rebate and some well placed info came back that multiple LEO shops had kicked them to the curb and to run -not walk away from this weapon. i did just that. just passing on that these folks (firearms instructors) felt that this was not the pistol you want to bet your life on. my2 cents
tj PS i saved up and bought a sig 226 and am i ever glad i did! |
Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
I am new to firearms and needing a good self defense weapon for myself. A friend was showing me a few options he thought might work for me. One gun we looked at was the S & W sigma 9mm. After the rebate it would be right at $300. It also comes with two extra 16 round magazines. After reading alot of the reviews online though everyone seems to say spend the extra $$ and get a glock. Any ideas from you guys for a first gun for a gal who needs to defend her homestead. I am on the shorter side and not super strong so I don't want anything too heavy. I plan on going this week with my friend to try the S & W out but I'm up for other suggestions to try while we're there.

Re: S&W Sigma in the 40Cal
I had done a ton of research when I saw them for 299 plus 2 extra magazines. The only negative I could find was the long and heavy trigger. Wolfe springs sells a kit for it and with some home work you can make it quite smooth if you like.
Have shot the heck out of mine with no issues at all. May want to buy 2 for the price of one of the others. Also something to ponder is the amount of used others in the gun shops, usually tells quite a story. mdp The grip is perfection...too did I mention usa made...enough said:D |
